More than 500,000 people were left without power on Tuesday, May 28, after strong winds and heavy rains battered North Texas early in the morning. The storm included gusts up to 77 miles per hour and hail the size of golf balls.
Early Tuesday morning, many residents in the Dallas area were awakened by tornado sirens. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tornado warning for parts of the region, and a severe storm alert was in effect until 11 a.m. for 21 counties in north and central Texas, including Dallas, Ellis, Kaufman, and Tarrant.
In addition to the tornado warnings, a flash flood warning was also in effect for parts of Dallas-Fort Worth until 9 a.m. Officials warned motorists to avoid driving on flooded roads.
Dallas County Judge Clay Lewis Jenkins announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he was preparing to issue an emergency declaration and warned that some residents would likely be without power for several days.
Before 6:30 a.m., a tornado was spotted in Dallas County, triggering alarms in Garland, Mesquite, and Richardson. By 7 a.m., the NWS issued a tornado warning for Terrell, Canton, and Wills Point. By 7:30 a.m., the warning included Canton, Van, and Callender Lake. A "tornado warning" is issued when a tornado has been detected by the NWS radar or sighted by residents.
Thousands of people are without power in North Texas. According to the Oncor outage map, power outages have been reported in parts of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Tarrant, Wise, and other counties in the area. As of 8:08 a.m., the total number of affected customers in North Texas was 643,860.
The expected high temperature for Tuesday is around 87 degrees Fahrenheit. After the heavy rains on Sunday and Monday, 1 to 2 inches of rain are expected on Tuesday. More rain and thunderstorms are likely on Monday night, potentially continuing after 10 p.m. Some storms may be severe. The sky will remain mostly cloudy, with a low around 69 degrees and a 60% chance of precipitation. New rainfall amounts between three-quarters and one inch are possible.
The new storm system continues a deadly weekend for several states in the central and southern U.S., where authorities reported at least 21 deaths across Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.
